Outdoor Adventures in Lake Havasu
Topock Gorge is a 20-mile scenic canyon in the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge. With its colorful, steep rock walls and abundant wildlife, it is often called a miniature Grand Canyon.
The gorge is one of the last undeveloped stretches of the lower Colorado River, with dramatic volcanic formations rising several hundred feet above the water on both sides. Accessible only by water, this isolation helps preserve the refuge’s protected status, keeping the shoreline pristine and the regional wildlife thriving.
Insider’s Tip: Head to nearby Topock Marsh for excellent bird-watching opportunities and spot pelicans, herons, rare rail birds, as well as quiet and calm fishing waters where you can catch bass, crappie, and catfish. For more information about fishing at National Wildlife Refuges, visit the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service website.
Spring and fall are the best times to visit for the most comfortable temperatures, with average highs typically in the 80s. Winter temps are also milder, and the season has less tourist traffic, but it can be chilly earlier in the day. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F, so early-morning outings are recommended.
Topock Gorge is only accessible by water, so plan to launch from Topock 66 Marina, Castle Rock, or Park Moabi, depending on your direction of travel. Check out our list of local launch ramps and marinas to learn more.
