Lake Havasu City was founded in 1963, but it was not until 1971 that this new desert community gained tremendous international publicity. That year, the London Bridge was rededicated after its massive-scale reconstruction process was completed. To welcome visitors and support the sale of residential lots, built on raw, vacant land in the Arizona desert, McCulloch Properties also built an open-air mall called the English Village. Located on a vacant three-acre site on the northeast corner of the London Bridge, the English Village was anchored by Hog in Armor Pub and City of London Arms Restaurant.
A Storybook Beginning
The English Village was originally envisioned as a charming introduction to the London Bridge rather than a traditional commercial center. With its storybook-style facades and architecture reminiscent of a Hollywood set, it quickly captured the hearts of both visitors and residents. Over time, new construction embraced and enhanced the English theme, bringing a more permanent presence to the area—including the beautifully integrated London Bridge Resort at the southeast corner of the bridge. Today, the English Village continues to reflect its unique character in the area surrounding the iconic London Bridge.
A Charming Chapter in Local History
After the residential lots were joyfully claimed, the English Village entered an exciting new phase beyond its original vision with McCulloch Properties. Local entrepreneurs and dreamers saw its potential and reimagined the space as a hub of family fun and entertainment. The beloved pub and restaurant expanded into a lively microbrewery and later a spirited playhouse—each bringing fresh energy and creativity to the Village.
Though the Village continued to evolve over time, these inspired efforts added rich layers to its story, creating a legacy of innovation, community, and imagination. Today, the English Village remains a beloved landmark—its character and charm continuing to spark memories and curiosity in all who visit.
Resilience and Reinvention
Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the English Village experienced a time of transition, with various owners bringing fresh ideas and ambitions to revitalize its unique charm. While these efforts met with mixed success, they reflected a strong belief in the Village’s potential as a vibrant community space. In 2006, a public initiative explored the possibility of city-led redevelopment, further highlighting the community's continued interest in the site’s future.
By the early 2010s, the Village stood at a crossroads, with a new opportunity for reinvention on the horizon. Though some of the original British-themed shops had moved on, a small collection of dedicated local businesses remained, keeping the spirit of the Village alive for both residents and visitors. These years became a quiet but meaningful chapter in the Village's journey—one marked by resilience, hope, and the groundwork for the renewal to come.
Today: A Vibrant Destination
Visitors to the English Village now enjoy a lively blend of shopping, sightseeing, dining, entertainment, outdoor recreation, and guided tours. Thoughtful updates over the years have made room for retail spaces that cater to both locals and tourists, all while honoring the charm of the Village's original design. The Go Lake Havasu tourism bureau welcomes guests at its beautifully remodeled Visitor Center, located where the historic City of London Arms Pub once stood. Just steps away, The London Bridge Resort continues to serve as a cornerstone of hospitality in the area—offering stunning views, family-friendly activities, and a unique connection to the heritage of Lake Havasu City.
